the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 83,\n \"text\": \"potential to be the best form of venture including all the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 88,\n \"text\": \"institutional VC that are out there and other forms as well\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 92,\n \"text\": \"Corporate venture could be the best\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 94,\n \"text\": \"The bad is that it's far from that right now And you know\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 99,\n \"text\": \"we as an industry need to better grasp how to play this game\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 105,\n \"text\": \"we're playing somebody else's game and we need to improve So\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 109,\n \"text\": \"we could be considered to be basketball players trying to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 112,\n \"text\": \"play soccer And if we do that it won't go well\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 117,\n \"text\": \"The ugly I think is that the whole venture industry is due a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 123,\n \"text\": \"radical rethink I would I would posit that a lot of the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 127,\n \"text\": \"returns in classical venture come from luck more than\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 131,\n \"text\": \"anything else come from the economic cycle more than\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 135,\n \"text\": \"anything else So if we as an industry want to improve we're\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 138,\n \"text\": \"gonna have to work out how to get better at that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 141,\n \"text\": \"So thank you That is that that's quite a bit of food for\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 144,\n \"text\": \"thought But we'll circle back to that And we'll kind of try\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 147,\n \"text\": \"to peel the onion away Now a little bit more In one of our\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 150,\n \"text\": \"earlier conversations you highlighted that the industry of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 155,\n \"text\": \"the parent has a huge impact on CVC on the mandate on the role\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 161,\n \"text\": \"and the focus of the CVC vehicle Can you elaborate on\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 166,\n \"text\": \"that a little bit\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 167,\n \"text\": \"Yeah absolutely So I think the way that new players come to the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 173,\n \"text\": \"industry is by being very similar to the industry itself\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 177,\n \"text\": \"So those players who were in the high tech industry initially\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 182,\n \"text\": \"setting up CVC units was relatively easy because the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 185,\n \"text\": \"targets the startups they wanted to invest in and the products\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 189,\n \"text\": \"that they were interested in were very similar to what they\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 192,\n \"text\": \"understood already And so for those guys to enter the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 195,\n \"text\": \"industry it was relatively easy Likewise for financial\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 198,\n \"text\": \"services players and for biotech players\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 201,\n \"text\": \"But as you get further away from the classic high tech\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 205,\n \"text\": \"industries it becomes a different story And so if you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 209,\n \"text\": \"are in agriculture if you are in industrial manufacturing if\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 215,\n \"text\": \"you are in a labor intensive industry rather than a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 221,\n \"text\": \"technology intensive industry how do you manage to take\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 226,\n \"text\": \"advantage of the venture paradigm the venture industry\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 230,\n \"text\": \"and so depending on your industry and depending on how\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 235,\n \"text\": \"far or close you are to how VC works today you're going to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 239,\n \"text\": \"have to adapt\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 240,\n \"text\": \"And so this is my my point is that you know which industry\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 245,\n \"text\": \"you're in will have a big impact on the sorts of things that you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 249,\n \"text\": \"might focus on If we take an example of an industry that is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 253,\n \"text\": \"manufacturing Now it may be that there are relatively few\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 259,\n \"text\": \"startups out there that are focused on the manufacturing\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 262,\n \"text\": \"process itself And so for you as a CVC When thinking about\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 267,\n \"text\": \"sourcing innovation using venture you'll have to think\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 271,\n \"text\": \"about not only your core processes but the subsidiary\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 274,\n \"text\": \"processes It may be that you start off by thinking about the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 278,\n \"text\": \"ancillary products that go around your product the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 281,\n \"text\": \"services the aftercare support the ancillary sales perhaps\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 286,\n \"text\": is never been more true I would say then 2020\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 297,\n \"text\": \"where my industry the travel industry has experienced huge\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 302,\n \"text\": \"disruption for obviously the reason you know the pandemic\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 305,\n \"text\": \"And so that has had a very large impact on the way that we have\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 309,\n \"text\": \"been thinking about CVC So whereas we have traditionally\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 314,\n \"text\": \"I say traditionally our group that have been going five years\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 317,\n \"text\": \"but we have tended to focus on a broad range of horizons both\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 324,\n \"text\": \"the near term the medium but also the moonshot the far long\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 327,\n \"text\": \"term out types of bets we focused on those But in 2020\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 333,\n \"text\": \"our horizons collapsed towards the immediate\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 337,\n \"text\": \"Why was that Because we understood that in order for our\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 341,\n \"text\": \"industry to survive we needed to find solutions that could be\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 344,\n \"text\": \"implemented more or less immediately How do we convince\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 347,\n \"text\": \"customers that it's safe to get on the plane How do we ensure\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 350,\n \"text\": \"that you know the planes are clean How do we ensure that the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 354,\n \"text\": \"touchpoints that a customer has to go through to go through\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 357,\n \"text\": \"their journey are reduced So that's kind of the examples I'm\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 361,\n \"text\": \"thinking of I say that your industry makes a huge difference\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 364,\n \"text\": \"to the way that you approach CVC\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 366,\n \"text\": \"Yeah So corporates often struggled with the objective of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 372,\n \"text\": \"their CVC units For new business units It's clear for\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 376,\n \"text\": \"CVC it's kind of hard to define them Can you comment on that I\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 383,\n \"text\": \"mean what's potentially a good way of circling the wagons and\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 387,\n \"text\": \"creating a clear mandate for a CVC\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 391,\n \"text\": \"Yes I think this is a very important issue because most of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 396,\n \"text\": \"us as corporations are driven by the profit metric So if a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 400,\n \"text\": \"business unit is returning profits that's great And if it\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 404,\n \"text\": \"isn't what do we do about it So when when any corporation\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 408,\n \"text\": \"starts a new line of business they'll always be thinking\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 411,\n \"text\": \"about you know what am I doing here What's the purpose of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 414,\n \"text\": \"this What can I expect to see out of this in the year 1 3 5\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 419,\n \"text\": \"10 year five timeline whatever it is that they're\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 421,\n \"text\": \"focusing on\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 422,\n \"text\": \"When they start a corporate venture capital unit those\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 426,\n \"text\": \"questions are harder to answer And so sometimes they don't\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 430,\n \"text\": \"answer them What they say is oh you know we're doing this\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 434,\n \"text\": \"in order to receive strategic benefits Well what is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 439,\n \"text\": \"strategic benefit And how do you measure that Some of them\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 443,\n \"text\": \"say we are looking for financial upside So we want to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 447,\n \"text\": \"invest in startups And ultimately those startups\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 449,\n \"text\": \"should return you know 100 times the value that we put into\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 454,\n \"text\": \"them\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 454,\n \"text\": \"So that kind of defines the spectrum of how people are\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 457,\n \"text\": \"thinking about it strategic at one end financial at the other\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 460,\n \"text\": \"end And the reality is of course more nuanced than that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 464,\n \"text\": \"So going back to first principles when you start up a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 467,\n \"text\": \"new business unit what are its objectives You know it's a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 472,\n \"text\": \"truism in our industry that the average corporate venture unit\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 476,\n \"text\": \"lasts about four years And if you look at that one of the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 479,\n \"text\": \"reasons is that we have economic cycles Another reason is that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 484,\n \"text\": \"senior management doesn't tend to last much longer than that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 487,\n \"text\": \"So the average tenure of a CEO is relatively short When the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 491,\n \"text\": \"new CEO comes in she's often motivated to look for changes as\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 496,\n \"text\": \"a way of making a mark but also as a way of going towards the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 502,\n \"text\": \"strategy that she has in mind So it's important for them to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 506,\n \"text\": \"make a change And sometimes you look at the CVC unit say Well\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 509,\n \"text\": \"what are these guys done For me Going back to the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 512,\n \"text\": \"objectives it's hard to say and so they become an easy\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 515,\n \"text\": \"target\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 517,\n \"text\": \"Now in our case at JetBlue technology ventures you know\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 520,\n \"text\": \"we think of ourselves as having a strategic impact and how do\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 524,\n \"text\": \"we measure that We measure it in a couple of ways And you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 527,\n \"text\": \"know let me be honest you know I won't say that the ways\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 530,\n \"text\": \"that we measure are perfect nothing close to that in fact\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 534,\n \"text\": \"but nevertheless measurements they are and you know how it\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 537,\n \"text\": \"is in in industry if you measure people they will play\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 542,\n \"text\": \"the game and try and maximize against the measurements\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 545,\n \"text\": \"So in our case the measurements are how many companies do we\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 548,\n \"text\": \"invest in that eventually become suppliers to the parent company\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 554,\n \"text\": \"So you know we are really looking for Distinguished\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 558,\n \"text\": \"innovation that we couldn't have come up with ourselves that will\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 561,\n \"text\": \"help us power the products and services that we can pass on to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 564,\n \"text\": \"our customers\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 565,\n \"text\": \"So if I can bring in 10 investments a year and five or\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 571,\n \"text\": \"more of those eventually become a supplier that I think is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 576,\n \"text\": \"right on track Moreover I will then look at the business case\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 581,\n \"text\": \"that the parent company has to develop in order to bring on a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 584,\n \"text\": \"new supplier And I will measure against that business case Did\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 589,\n \"text\": \"we deliver additional revenue additional profit above and\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 593,\n \"text\": \"beyond what might have been delivered without the startup\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 597,\n \"text\": \"And if we did then again we're delivering value\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 601,\n \"text\": \"So these are the two key metrics that we that we measure There\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 605,\n \"text\": \"are some other subsidiary metrics which are around the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 608,\n \"text\": \"knowledge base that we've helped develop back at base So I read\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 614,\n \"text\": \"a statistic somewhere that the age of your doctor has an impact\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 619,\n \"text\": \"on the type of prognosis you will receive and the type of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 624,\n \"text\": \"cure that you will be prescribed Because doctors are\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 628,\n \"text\": \"very busy they often don't have time to find out about the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 632,\n \"text\": \"latest technology in their field And they often may be\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 637,\n \"text\": \"wary of it because they're not familiar with it\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 639,\n \"text\": \"Likewise for most industries those practitioners sometimes do\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 644,\n \"text\": \"not have time to look around them and see what's happening\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 648,\n \"text\": \"So one of the metrics that we have as a subsidiary goal is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 651,\n \"text\": \"informing people within our organization of what is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 655,\n \"text\": \"innovation in their field and allowing them to participate in\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 659,\n \"text\": \"that internal innovation if you like So those are the metrics\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 662,\n \"text\": \"that we use as they say not perfect But coming back to the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 666,\n \"text\": \"strategic versus financial axis what you can say now is that we\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 671,\n \"text\": \"have a strategic goal which is to do these things as I\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 674,\n \"text\": \"mentioned the financial aspect may partly be that we need the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 679,\n \"text\": \"startups we invest in to be around long enough for us to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 683,\n \"text\": \"realize those strategic goals\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 685,\n \"text\": \"And being around long enough implies success financial\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 689,\n \"text\": \"success else resources will be allocated elsewhere So we do\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 694,\n \"text\": \"measure that And then the final thing that we think about is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 699,\n \"text\": \"you know I have an exit from a company and maybe I make 100\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 702,\n \"text\": \"million or maybe if I'm lucky I make more than that on that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 705,\n \"text\": \"exit which is great JetBlue you know in normal days is an\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 711,\n \"text\": \"8 billion revenue Corporation If I can make 1 increase in\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 717,\n \"text\": \"that revenue stream or even let's say two for sake of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 721,\n \"text\": \"argument that's 160 million every year So yes I'd love to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 727,\n \"text\": \"have great exits give me a couple of percentage points of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 731,\n \"text\": \"increased revenue I'll be very happy with that as well\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 733,\n \"text\": \"A follow on question You touched on engaging your kind of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 741,\n \"text\": \"internal business units and senior executives any thoughts\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 745,\n \"text\": \"on what you've seen what kind of works and doesn't work Because\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 749,\n \"text\": \"ultimately I mean as a CVC you're going out and pitching\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 753,\n \"text\": \"yourself to the startups saying you know we are we're actually\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 756,\n \"text\": \"better than a VC because we give you access to some of our\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 759,\n \"text\": \"business units What have you seen that kind of work So what\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 763,\n \"text\": \"have you what have you used tools to engage those business\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 767,\n \"text\": \"units\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 768,\n \"text\": \"Yeah So a couple of things So you know I think we're in the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 772,\n \"text\": \"third wave of CVC The first wave was the CEO sending a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 779,\n \"text\": \"trusted adviser to go to Silicon Valley typically look around at\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 783,\n \"text\": \"some deals and come back with something that didn't work\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 785,\n \"text\": \"because those people were not connected into the industry the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 789,\n \"text\": \"venture industry\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 790,\n \"text\": \"The second wave was hire a VC and get them to do that They\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 795,\n \"text\": \"have the connections they have the network but those people\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 798,\n \"text\": \"will not be able to fully understand what were the goals\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 801,\n \"text\": \"of the corporation what were the politics required in order\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 805,\n \"text\": \"for a startup to be successfully integrated as a supplier back\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 810,\n \"text\": \"into the mothership\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 812,\n \"text\": \"So wave three is where we say we need a combination of skills\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 816,\n \"text\": \"we need people who really understand our industry and our\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 819,\n \"text\": \"organization as well as people who understand the VC industry\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 824,\n \"text\": \"and are connected That's very rarely one person So you need a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 829,\n \"text\": \"group of skills that can do that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 831,\n \"text\": \"The way that we have approached it is by saying what are the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 835,\n \"text\": \"objectives of the business units at the parent company And in\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 840,\n \"text\": \"Jetblue's case we are an extremely open organization We\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 843,\n \"text\": \"know what each other's objectives are and we share and\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 846,\n \"text\": \"talk about them And we have shared goals where we jointly\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 849,\n \"text\": \"work towards objectives So what we do is we go and look for\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 853,\n \"text\": \"those business units who have objectives where we can be\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 856,\n \"text\": \"helpful because let's not pretend that a startup can solve\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 860,\n \"text\": \"every problem that a large corporation has it clearly\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 862,\n \"text\": \"can't But there are definitely some areas where it can be\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 866,\n \"text\": \"extremely useful\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 867,\n \"text\": \"So go look for those business units that A have problems that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 871,\n \"text\": \"you can solve and B are open to working with you Again in a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 876,\n \"text\": \"large corporation there will be a range of views And when you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 880,\n \"text\": \"set up a new CVC unit some people will be in favor of the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 884,\n \"text\": \"idea And some people may feel that those are resources that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 887,\n \"text\": \"may have better been deployed with them They may be less\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 891,\n \"text\": \"receptive to working with you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 893,\n \"text\": \"So find those friends who have the needs that you can help\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 897,\n \"text\": \"solve and solve those needs Help educate them Go work with\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 903,\n \"text\": \"them find out which of the most strategically important and most\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 906,\n \"text\": \"difficult for them to solve and help them solve those And once\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 910,\n \"text\": \"you do that and hopefully get success from that you know\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 914,\n \"text\": \"success breeds interest from other business units So having\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 919,\n \"text\": \"the people within your organization your CVC group\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 922,\n \"text\": \"that know how your parent company works and know how to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 926,\n \"text\": \"talk to the people that are there know how to deliver\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 929,\n \"text\": \"success for those business units will inevitably make\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 934,\n \"text\": \"those other people in the business units that maybe we're\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 936,\n \"text\": \"not initially so keen on working with you interested in working\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 941,\n \"text\": \"with you because they will look around and say Well those guys\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 944,\n \"text\": \"are doing better than I am perhaps it's time for me to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 948,\n \"text\": \"engage as well\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 949,\n \"text\": \"And so those are kind of the sort of thoughts that we've had\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 952,\n \"text\": \"very openly within the organization it's not the case\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 955,\n \"text\": \"that everybody's ready to work with you immediately And then\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 958,\n \"text\": \"maybe nothing wrong with that But slowly showing success\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 962,\n \"text\": \"proving your worth meeting your goals is a very attractive\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 969,\n \"text\": \"thing for other people in your organization\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 972,\n \"text\": \"Very good So now obviously you know as a CVC or as a VC\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 977,\n \"text\": \"I mean you you're operating inside an ecosystem and kind of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 981,\n \"text\": \"finding your your space and your place in that ecosystem is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 986,\n \"text\": \"crucial And as you've seen in the last couple of years we've\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 991,\n \"text\": \"had every year new record number of deals and dollars deployed by\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 997,\n \"text\": \"CVCs into entrepreneurs Share your thoughts with us on has is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1007,\n \"text\": \"the perception of CVC changing Are you seeing different types\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1012,\n \"text\": \"of entrepreneurs approaching CVC I mean just the fact that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1018,\n \"text\": \"CVCs were able to deploy more and more capital every year\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1023,\n \"text\": \"success successfully and successively is clearly a sign\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1028,\n \"text\": \"that entrepreneurs are more willing to engage with CVCs\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1032,\n \"text\": \"which in turn has to mean that CVCs are doing a good job is a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1036,\n \"text\": \"fair comment\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1038,\n \"text\": \"I would say caveat investor So you know having been an\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1046,\n \"text\": \"entrepreneur myself you know there are a lot of wise words\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1050,\n \"text\": \"around the industry about not just taking the money about\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1056,\n \"text\": \"looking for investors that add value and have a cultural\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1060,\n \"text\": \"affinity to the what the thing that you're doing and the team\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1063,\n \"text\": \"that you are The reality is however that sometimes you're\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1068,\n \"text\": \"desperate And so you'll take money where you can find it And\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1073,\n \"text\": \"so the increasing volumes alone don't tell me that CVC is being\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1078,\n \"text\": \"more successful\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1079,\n \"text\": \"However I would agree that we are being more successful And\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1083,\n \"text\": \"the reason I would point to is if you look at the types of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1087,\n \"text\": \"companies that CVCs have started to invest in they are the top\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1091,\n \"text\": \"notch startups out there And so that tells me that those\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1098,\n \"text\": \"companies where there is frankly an abundance of money\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1102,\n \"text\": \"available and are choosing to work with CVC\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1106,\n \"text\": \"So I do agree with your initial contention but the image of CVC\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1110,\n \"text\": \"is improving And I think that what has happened is we've gone\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1114,\n \"text\": \"through those waves that I referred to earlier I also\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1117,\n \"text\": \"think what is happening is that CVCs have have realized their\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1124,\n \"text\": \"importance or lack of importance in the ecosystem What I mean by\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1130,\n \"text\": \"that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1130,\n \"text\": \"So imagine you know you're a very senior executive at some\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1134,\n \"text\": \"very important corporation that is in the fortune 100 or\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1138,\n \"text\": \"whatever it might be And you imagine that you're so\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1142,\n \"text\": \"impressive that pretty much any startup that you went to would\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1145,\n \"text\": \"be more than happy to work with you But unfortunately that's\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1148,\n \"text\": \"not how it works You know startups have a limited amount\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1152,\n \"text\": \"of time and resources And unless you're able to move\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1155,\n \"text\": \"quickly and prove worth they will move on by nature they\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1159,\n \"text\": \"have to and so they're not so impressed and they won't\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1162,\n \"text\": \"necessarily wait around for you to make a decision\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1164,\n \"text\": \"So I think what's happened is that CVCs have understood little\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1168,\n \"text\": \"by little that they need to look like VC they need to make\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1172,\n \"text\": \"decisions quickly They need to eliminate a lot of the terms\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1176,\n \"text\": \"that traditionally they had asked for let's say its\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1179,\n \"text\": \"exclusivity let's say if the right of first refusal to buy a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1182,\n \"text\": \"company because those terms depress the ultimate the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1186,\n \"text\": \"ultimate value of the startup\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1188,\n \"text\": \"And so those have to go and they have gone and so I would say\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1191,\n \"text\": \"that CVCs have become much better and that the industry's\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1196,\n \"text\": \"image has improved because of that realization of we're\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1199,\n \"text\": \"playing Somebody else's game Having said all of that I would\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1204,\n \"text\": \"say there are still a number of VCs out there who still have a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1208,\n \"text\": \"negative image of CVC And it is true there are some CVC that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1212,\n \"text\": \"don't do a great job But to be honest with you there are\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1214,\n \"text\": \"plenty of VCs that don't do a great job either\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1217,\n \"text\": \"So you know I think we are improving And I think that you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1221,\n \"text\": \"know like any situation choose your partner's wisely\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1226,\n \"text\": \"And you know there have been some CVCs that have been around\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1229,\n \"text\": \"for many many years who have excellent reputations of choose your\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1241,\n \"text\": \"investor carefully\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1243,\n \"text\": \"Sure Now CVC in 2020 what surprised me a little bit was\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1249,\n \"text\": \"that from what I can see right now and still waiting for the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1253,\n \"text\": \"final data to come out for the year but I don't think there\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1256,\n \"text\": \"was a slowdown in terms of CVC activity which is kind of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1262,\n \"text\": \"unusual because historically CVCs have traditionally gone\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1267,\n \"text\": \"back into their shell when crisis hits\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1271,\n \"text\": \"So it was basically Okay you know we're not doing well\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1275,\n \"text\": \"let's go back to core and core was clearly not CVC So the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1279,\n \"text\": \"corporate parents agenda became basically top of the top of the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1282,\n \"text\": \"list again Did you see that as well And Did that surprise you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1289,\n \"text\": \"I have seen the same thing I think I was initially a bit\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1294,\n \"text\": \"surprised But now having thought about a little bit more\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1299,\n \"text\": \"I would say that what I understand is that the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1303,\n \"text\": \"imperative around why you would create a CVC has become so\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1309,\n \"text\": \"important now I would say perhaps essential to a lot of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1313,\n \"text\": \"businesses that there isn't really a sense that you can slow\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1317,\n \"text\": \"down\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1318,\n \"text\": \"So in a way the innovation that CVCs are bringing to their\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1323,\n \"text\": \"parents has become core And you know we I think we're all\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1327,\n \"text\": \"familiar with the pace of change that's happened in in our\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1331,\n \"text\": \"industries that pace of change hasn't slowed down despite the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1335,\n \"text\": \"pandemic And so you know going one level further in\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1339,\n \"text\": \"there are obviously a set of industries that have had done\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1342,\n \"text\": \"very well in the pandemic you know delivery services remote\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1346,\n \"text\": \"services video conferencing anything that could have you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1350,\n \"text\": \"know that has could benefit from the fact that we're all\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1353,\n \"text\": \"staying at home\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1354,\n \"text\": \"Those those industries are done extremely well I think what has\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1357,\n \"text\": \"happened also is that the concept of digital\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1362,\n \"text\": \"transformation has become the concept of digital acceleration\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1367,\n \"text\": \"So it's no longer a question that you should be thinking\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1370,\n \"text\": \"about transforming your industry by adding a digital aspect It\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1373,\n \"text\": \"is how fast and how quickly can I go down that path And so you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1378,\n \"text\": \"know if you think of those things what it says to me is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1381,\n \"text\": \"that there was an initial pause I think in the sort of end of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1386,\n \"text\": \"the first quarter 2020 when people were evaluating what it\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1389,\n \"text\": \"is that they should be doing But then they just came straight\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1392,\n \"text\": \"back because what they realized is that Well two things\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1395,\n \"text\": \"One is actually investing in a downturn is a great idea You\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1400,\n \"text\": \"give the startups that you invest in the time to build the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1404,\n \"text\": \"product and service that you're looking for Valuations are\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1407,\n \"text\": \"probably a little bit depressed And so that makes sense And\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1410,\n \"text\": \"innovative ideas flourish in those environments\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1414,\n \"text\": \"And then I think the second thing is that you know\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1417,\n \"text\": \"companies realized that if they didn't keep on doing what they\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1422,\n \"text\": \"were doing in terms of finding innovation and deploying it\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1425,\n \"text\": \"that when the upturn came as it inevitably does fortunately\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1430,\n \"text\": \"they would be behind their competitors that are carried on\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1434,\n \"text\": \"So there was a if you like a sort of competitive elements to\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1438,\n \"text\": \"ensuring that you are not left behind as the as the optimum\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1442,\n \"text\": \"came And I think those factors have outweighed the other\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1445,\n \"text\": \"factors\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1447,\n \"text\": \"The only perhaps exception there would be for those\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1451,\n \"text\": \"industries that are you know severely suffering where it is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1456,\n \"text\": \"a question of survival as opposed to trying to thrive And\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1460,\n \"text\": \"for those industries I do understand why they may have\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1464,\n \"text\": \"focused back on the core but in general I think your point is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1468,\n \"text\": \"very well taken CVCs really really you know put wood\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1474,\n \"text\": \"behind the arrow and in previous downturns they're all\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1479,\n \"text\": \"retreated they've disbanded I think what they've also realized\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1483,\n \"text\": \"is that it takes you know people have long memories in\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1486,\n \"text\": \"this industry And so it takes a long time to repair your\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1489,\n \"text\": \"reputation So they've made the decision that they will carry on\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1493,\n \"text\": \"investing and I think that's probably the right one\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1496,\n \"text\": \"Yeah so final question For our audience likely senior\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1503,\n \"text\": \"executives board members that are right now sitting there and\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1508,\n \"text\": \"thinking through how they should build their corporate venturing\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1514,\n \"text\": \"units and how to start off Two or three comments or points of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1521,\n \"text\": \"advice that you would give them if you could be at that point\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1524,\n \"text\": \"again and look back\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1529,\n \"text\": \"I think first thing is investing in other funds isn't helpful So\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1537,\n \"text\": \"a lot of firms think that they'll dip their toe in the\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1540,\n \"text\": \"water by investing in a fund or two and learning that way And\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1546,\n \"text\": \"the reality is that is that most VC funds are not set up as a way\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1550,\n \"text\": \"of teaching limited partners what they're doing and finding\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1556,\n \"text\": \"them great deals they are focused squarely on financial\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1560,\n \"text\": \"returns And if you're going to do something like that you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1564,\n \"text\": \"know at least choose a sector specific fund that you can work\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1568,\n \"text\": \"with But in all honesty the best thing that you can do is\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1572,\n \"text\": \"you start dabbling So that would be my first point of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1576,\n \"text\": \"advice\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1576,\n \"text\": \"Second point of advice would be go find the right team to help\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1582,\n \"text\": \"you So find somebody from within your organization that\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1586,\n \"text\": \"really understands the organization and can act as\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1589,\n \"text\": \"that that liaison between the ventures group and the business\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1596,\n \"text\": \"units Without that it's very hard to deliver strategic value\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1602,\n \"text\": \"And then find somebody who understands the industry And by\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1607,\n \"text\": \"the industry I mean the venture industry The connection\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1611,\n \"text\": \"between those two roles will be the pivots around which you can\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1615,\n \"text\": \"be successful because you need to have both skill sets in order\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1619,\n \"text\": \"for it to work And then the third thing I would say is go\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1623,\n \"text\": \"talk to all the others There are more than 2000 CVC units out\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1630,\n \"text\": \"there right now And there are a number of places where those\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1633,\n \"text\": \"those people meet and congregate There are a number\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1636,\n \"text\": \"of people in different industries where you can go and\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1639,\n \"text\": \"find out what worked well And what didn't work Well Should\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1643,\n \"text\": \"you be taking stakes that are larger than 20 which may\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1646,\n \"text\": \"result in you having to roll up a startups losses into your pl\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1651,\n \"text\": \"Should you be taking board seats What is the situation\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1655,\n \"text\": \"around Should you be focused on strategic or financial alone\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1659,\n \"text\": \"Should you be considering acquisitions Or is VC your your\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1663,\n \"text\": \"door opener into an acquisition\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1665,\n \"text\": \"So all of these questions need to be pondered and they have a\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1670,\n \"text\": \"vision developed as to what it is you want to do And if I\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1674,\n \"text\": \"strongly recommend you go do your homework first Because you\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1678,\n \"text\": \"know the reality of VC is that you don't know what if you're\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1683,\n \"text\": \"right or not for a number of years possibly five years\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1687,\n \"text\": \"normally speaking seven to 10 And so in order to make sure\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1691,\n \"text\": \"you're doing things right it's really helpful to get some\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1695,\n \"text\": \"experience in there So those would be my top of the top of\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1698,\n \"text\": \"mine types of things to be thinking about\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1701,\n \"text\": \"But one thing I would say is that I've yet to discover an\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1704,\n \"text\": \"industry that couldn't use a little bit of CVC help You\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1710,\n \"text\": \"know there are lots of different ways where you can\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1712,\n \"text\": \"find innovation internally and externally Think CVC is right\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1717,\n \"text\": \"now at least one of the best bets that one has as an\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1721,\n \"text\": \"additional thing you might do doesn't have to necessarily\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1724,\n \"text\": \"replace other things But it's a really good way of finding out\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1727,\n \"text\": \"what's going on out there and getting involved\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1730,\n \"text\": \"So it's clearly worthwhile spending a bit of time rolling\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1734,\n \"text\": \"up your sleeves start dabbling as you called it And don't be\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1739,\n \"text\": \"shy to reach out to those that are doing it and have done it\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1743,\n \"text\": \"already for a long time\"\n },\n {\n \"start\": 1745,\n \"text\": \"And people are willing to talk Yeah absolutely Yeah\"\n },\n {\n \"start\":
